Abstract:
This bachelor work deals with the language of newspaper headlines of contemporary
British newspapers. The first part of this work expounds the principle of mass
communication and defines the stylistic elements that are closely related to the theme of
this work, and determines the distinctive linguistic features typical for the writing of
headlines that are further developed in the body of this survey. This data is crucial for
the following analysis. The Contemporary British newspapers described in this work are
classified into two groups, which are further compared and contrasted. A brief insight
into the history of newspaper headlines is introduced in order to confront the findings so
as to trace the trends in newspaper reporting. Next, the analysis of randomly chosen
newspaper headlines is described on the basis of the criteria defined in this work. The
final part of this work summarises the current trends in newspaper headline writing by
which contemporary British newspapers address their readers.
